If students live more than 1.5 miles from Maryville Junior High School, they are eligible to ride a bus.

The student drop-off/pick-up lanes behind the school will be open, but it may be easier to drop off and pick up students across the street at  First United Methodist  or in the lot below the track.

Students may enter through the gym or back doors of the school.  Students may eat breakfast in the cafeteria, or go to the gym, library, or supervised study hall

If students ride a bus or arrive before 8:10 a.m. they are required to report to the gym, café, library or morning tutoring.  Please do not go into the out-of-bounds areas in the school building.

The building opens at 7:30 a.m. A bell will ring at 8:10 to dismiss students to 1st period.    

The tardy bell rings at 8:20.  If a student is late to school, he/she must report to the front office for an admit slip.

According to MCS Board Policy, an absence occurs when a student is not in attendance at that student's assigned location.  Absences are discouraged, but will be excused by the principal for personal illness, illness in the family temporarily requiring help from the child, death in the family, compliance with established ordinances of religion and instruction, or, with prior approval for other reasons.  All absences, excused or unexcused, will be a part of a student’s total attendance record, and used for truancy purposes. Junior high students who miss 50% or more of class time (37-minutes) from a class period will be counted absent.

In addition, up to ten days per year a student may be excused with a parental note.  All other absences for which proper documentation (excuse note) is not provided within three school days, are considered unexcused.  

Following an absence, a student must present a written excuse from a parent/guardian stating the reason for the absence.  All excuse notes from parents and professionals must be presented the day the student returns or no later than the third day, to determine if the absence is “excused” or “unexcused” before the student is admitted to class.  Notes from health care professionals must clearly state the period of time the student was or will be required to be absent. According to Maryville City School Board Policy, section 10.2.1.5 the school reserves the right to reject doctor notes. If parents want to appeal an unexcused absence, they should communicate with the principal. The principal’s decision will be final at the school level.

If the student is to be absent for reasons other than the reasons previously stated, the parent will need to discuss the situation beforehand with the principal to determine whether or not the absence can be considered an excused absence. Classroom assignments must be completed upon the student's return from any prior approved absence.

If a student is absent all day and arrives at school the next day before the tardy bell, he/she should report to the attendance office with his/her written note from a parent, guardian, and/or doctor. Students who arrive after the tardy bell should report to the school main office. School Board policy states that a note written and signed by the parent/guardian must be presented and must give acceptable reasons for the absence in order for the student to receive an excused absence. Absences are automatically marked unexcused if a note is not presented upon a student’s return to school. When a student has accumulated five (5) unexcused absences the parent / guardian will be sent a letter home informing the parents of T.C.A. 49-6-3007.   On or before 10 days of unexcused absences the parent(s) / guardian(s) will be sent a letter stating T.C.A. 49-6-3007, and informing the parent(s) that they are required to attend a meeting with the Truancy Board. The Truancy Board will review the student’s attendance record and develop an Attendance Plan, provide support and intervention to address and prevent continued absenteeism.

Students who are tardy need to have a written note from their parents.  Students are to report to the school office for an admit slip. Students tardy to school more than six (6) times in the school year will be assigned detention after school. A student who has been detained in the office or by a teacher should ask for a pass from the person who detained him/her before going to his/her next class.  Repeated tardiness to school will result in a referral to the Maryville City Schools Attendance and Truancy Coordinator for further investigation.

Classes end at 3:20 p.m.  Students have 5 minutes to go directly to the bus loading area.  All students, unless they have made previous arrangements to meet with a teacher, are attending after-school tutoring, studying in the library, attending a club meeting, or athletic practice are to be out of the building by 3:40 p.m.

Breakfast will be available for students to purchase 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. in the café.     

The lunchroom management and fellow students will appreciate your cooperation in:

• Depositing all lunch litter in wastebaskets
• Leaving the table and floor around your place in a clean condition for others
• Returning all trays and utensils to the dish washing area.

After eating lunch all students remain in the café and wait to be dismissed to class.

Only those students with physical disabilities sufficient to prevent safe use of the stairways are permitted to use the elevators.  The school nurse will issue elevator passes to students for which a pass is deemed necessary and appropriate.

Students are not permitted in the halls during class periods unless they are accompanied by a teacher or have a hall pass from a faculty or staff member.

Students may purchase school supplies in the library.

Students are not permitted to leave school grounds at any time during the school day without permission from the main office.  When parents or guardians come to pick up their children during school hours, they must enter the front office and sign out their children. Please allow fifteen (15 minutes) for the checkout process. In accordance with Maryville City School Board Policy, a student who leaves school after the school day has begun will be recorded absent from all classes he/she misses.  A student absent more than 50% of the school day will be counted absent for the entire school day.

Library hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Students may go to the library before and after school for quiet study time and checking out books.

Student will be assigned a locker.  Periodic inspections will be made during the school year.

• Use only the locker assigned to you.  
• Do not tamper with another student’s locker.
• All students are encouraged put a lock on their lockers.
• The school reserves the right to inspect student lockers at any time.

Labeling students' clothing makes it possible for easy identification and return.  Students who find lost articles are asked to take them to the gym where they can be claimed by their owners. Articles not claimed will be donated to charity or washed and added to the school’s clothes closet at the end of each semester.

PowerSchool provides online access to a student’s grades and attendance by parents or guardians of students.  PowerSchool can be accessed through https://ps.maryvillecityschools.k12.tn.us/public/.  Please call the school’s main office if you need assistance setting up an account to access your child’s grades or attendance online.

 The clinic is located in the library.  The school nurse is available to assist students throughout the day.  Students who are ill or need first aid must request a pass from a teacher to go to the clinic.  Students report directly to main office when the clinic is closed.

If additional funding from the state is available, Tutoring sessions and a technology lab are available 7:30 a.m. to 8:10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at designated locations in the school building.  Contact the school counseling office for additional information.

The school website is located at http://www.maryville-schools.org/mjhs.  It is the public face of MJHS and includes daily announcements, school calendar, faculty and staff e-mail addresses and other information. 

The physical education portion of wellness is required unless excused by written request of the family physician.  The physician’s excuse should note the student’s physical limitations in sufficient detail for development of an adaptive physical education program.  Parents or students may obtain a form from the P.E. teachers which the physician may wish to use. Valuables should be left locked in the student’s locker before coming to P.E. and should not be left in the P.E. room or P.E. locker room.

 Teachers, school counselors, administrators and staff are here to help you.  Ask your teacher for help before you leave class. If you are in the hall between classes, ask a teacher standing at a classroom door or monitoring the hallway.  We want to help you become familiar and comfortable with MJHS.
